I guess gdm was somehow misconfigured. Boot into the recovery mode. From there select *root*, type your password, and then type this at the prompt:
dpkg-reconfigure gdm Alternatetively, you can rename the file /var/lib/gdm/.ICEAuthority to 1.ICEAuthority, and reboot. If it works, a new .ICEAuthourity file will be created, and you can delete the 1.ICEAuthority file. Regards, Chhatoi Pritam Baral
