I had the same problem on Kubuntu Hardy, from a Gutsy dist-upgrade.

I managed to find out that Sun Java was working well. The problem was
that OpenJDK Java seems to be incompatible with Frostwire, and Hardy
selects it by default as JRE.

I solved selecting Sun Java with the following command:
# update-alternatives --config java
