Manual has:
The message preview shows the contents of your currently selected message in
the list above the preview.
Taking "the contents of your currently selected message" as the object, this
can be misread as "in the list above the preview" being where the message is
shown. Directly connecting user actions with consequences can be made more
explicit here, too.
Suggestion:
If a message is selected in this list, its contents are shown in the message
preview pane below.
