I believe the notification area is still being called the notification area, just the behaviour is changing. To differentiate between old and new behaviour, developers have given the new system a name "application indicators."
To the end user, it's still an area for notifications - therefore, notification area. The Manual makes frequent mention of the notification area here; however, the notification area is supposed to be going away by Maverick, and is currently on end-of-life/end-of-support, as it were, in Lucid.
