On https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InternetRelayChat I found the following: The Ubuntu channels can be found on the freenode network, irc.freenode.net. Each server is known by a "hostname" such as irc.ais.net, etc. So I guess irc.freenode.net is the hostname of a server.
