Sorry for getting to this so late. Based on the plethora of news stories on Ubuntu-centric websites, I now have confidence that there will be controls in 12.10 to enable/disable the online search results. The controls are not ideal, but they are coming, and will no doubt be refined in future releases.
It's just a few lines, no screenshot. We can develop this further in 13.04.
