...high profile people who are mucking around with Ubuntu these days. Latest to (almost) join their ranks is Engadget founder Peter Rojas. Peter is a good friend, and has been our personal consumer tech/gadget trend spotter. He has a pretty solid track record of making the right picks, and can astutely tell, what will sell and what won't.
Rojas recently installed Ubuntu on his Sony Vaio F5 and seems to be pretty happy, though not quite ready to make the switch. In other words, give it a few months, and Ubuntu might actually start to get serious traction.
