Hi there I am the technical consultant for a new CGI animation studio that will be built in Cape Town South Africa next year. We are planning to make South Africa's first CGI animated feature film. Our installation will probably result in one of the fastest super computer sites in Southern Africa, and we are planning to run our render farm and the 100 seater animation studio on Linux. the reason for this email is to explore the suitability of using Ubuntu for the installation - particularly because of the South African angle which we are trying to promote. Or technical partners are recommending Red Hat or Suse - but I am exploring the possibility of using Ubuntu. Would this be viable? Is Ubuntu robust enough for such an installation? Is there sufficient support in South Africa in general and Cape Town in particular to assist us. It would be my intention to hire a Linux expert to work with us for the 30 month duration of the project (and beyond if we make additional films) I like Kubuntu as a desktop - and would like to consider that for the studio. We will be running Autodesk software - Maya, Mental Ray and discipline specific applications (all which are available on Linux) I would appreciate further information. We are also not averse to giving screen credits etc in relation to the support we receive for this project. The film is American funded and will more than likely be distributed by Warner Brothers.
