There is a 'youth' (read: youth = <30) radio station over here in Australia called JJJ, that has used this sort of gimmickry for a competition (http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/events/beatthedrum/). This attracted similar sorts of stunts to the firefox cropcircle (the most recent winner in fact was a cropcircle), which mind you, is a pretty good stunt in itself. IMHO these sorts of things, with appropriate guidelines for entries (ie, no vandalism or other illegal activity etc) can be hugely amusing and entertaining. However, for some of the more attention-grabbing things, something needs to be offered as incentive.
