I think it's a good idea to have an Ubuntu group/island-type thing on Second
Life, and for it to be in a kind of cluster of related projects, but I will not
join it myself, and the same will probably apply to lots of other Ubuntu users
too.

The reason? Wel, I was introduced to Second Life by my girlfriend after hearing
lots about it but never really investigating. When I heard that the client was
becoming open I thought I'd see if there was a Linux version. Well, there is
but it doesn't work for me. After a couple of hours getting dependancies,
tinkering with 32bit libraries (my system is 64bit), trying a few different
graphics drivers for my laptop's crappy embedded ATI chips, etc. I just gave
up. I like the idea of Second Life, and I know that efforts are underway to
package it for Debian/Ubuntu but at the moment it is just completely
inaccessible to me (and I'm sure others too. I think Melissa Draper blogged
about it a while ago). For things like this to work there needs to be pressure
on LindenLabs and others to make the software work more easily (for example,
letting me just log in would be a great start, since chatting with others would
still be a great help even if the avatars were just represented as
coloured dots on a black screen, then features such as 3D graphics, sound,
etc. could be enabled for those that are capable of displaying them)

Best of luck with the initiative though, and I have nothing against you or your
idea, I just get frustrated by companies assuring me that their products "work
on Linux", but then finding either that a lot of work is involved (SL), or it
is just false advertising (ATI).

Regards,
Chris Warburton
