There may be significant culture implications I think.
In UK at least there are very many overtones with the words 'Ladies'
or with 'Gentlemen. These may have a significant effect.

Women in my life prefer to be regarded as  'women' and not a 'ladies'.
There is outrageous humour in UK television which is popular where a
transvestite always exclaims in a very affected way 'I am a Lady!'

I welcome choice, and the large choice available in the fashion shops
suggests that in general, tastes vary a lot.
