Why Pay More? That's a good question.

[ubuntu-marketing] Shoe Circus - Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates

Microsoft have recently begun a new marketing campaign using Jerry
Seinfeld. It is a costly exercise and they obviously expect it to be
worth the money and effort. However, it seems it is somewhat obtuse in
its message although it would be unwise to underestimate microsoft.

An interesting comment I have seen is about a few subliminals 'Why
pay more?'
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/sep/11/microsoft.advertising
'.....looking for subliminals, and noted the message repeated on signs
and posters: Why pay more? Gates is famously tight with money, and
perhaps this is a veiled response to Apple, which doesn't even compete
in the mainstream market for PCs costing £250 to £500.....'

I thought this slogan would be a useful one for my own local Free
Software displays, and of course, International Software Freedom Day
is nearly upon us too.

My thoughts continued - if microsoft sees Apple as a competitor that
is just singularly and notably more expensive, albeit within the same
proprietary stable, then what will microsoft say in the next episodes,
perhaps subliminally, about its *real* competitor, (Ubuntu) GNU/Linux?

Whatever weaknesses or disadvantages that microsoft might choose to
highlight can perhaps be countered in some way by a subtle counter
campaign - get ready?
