The version of MPlayer in Ubuntu is quite old. The SMPlayer official site http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/downloads.php?tr_lang=en flat-out says this, and adds: "SMPlayer has support for some of the new features of mplayer, so a newer version is highly recommended."
Meanwhile, mplayer has been regularly updated from SVN on debian-multimedia.org, along with associated packages. Ubuntu does its own packaging, which seems like a duplication of effort since we've been using packages from DMO for quite a while (just from what I remember: avidemux, xvidcore, x264, qdvdauthor, kdenlive, mpeg4ip, among others) and we've been exchanging patches with them, for mutual benefit. The latest mplayer SVN version there is 20080417. I'd like to hear William Grant's opinion about this first, so I've CC'd him. Would we want to update mplayer, and if so, would we want to merge from debian-multimedia or continue maintaining it in Ubuntu independently?
