Hello, I am using the package lcdproc. The current version (0.5.2-ubuntu -> ubuntu 9.04) contains the support for hd44780 but it does not work. I had to compile the corresponding *.so from source (http://lcdproc.sourceforge.net/nightly/). I suggest you update the package lcdproc to have support for hd44780 out of the box.
