Dear Robie, thank you for your response. According to the document, I come to the following conclusion:
1) Package hdfview (and related) Severe regression - needs update / removal: The program is not able to load *any* HDF files, makes it basically useless. 2) Package libhdf5-100 (and related) Potential problem with user data - update desireable: Even though the version of the packages in bionic (1.10.0-patch1) does not delete any user data, in a multi OS environment the Ubuntu bionic users might be unable to read/write/modify data from other users with a higher version of the libraries (> 1.10.3). The HDF Group (authors of the library) stresses at least to use version 1.10.4. Packages in this version are avaible starting with disco and could be backported. I have no experience with packaging, but am willing to help.
