It appeared that unetbootin is to blame:

It has been a while since I booted from a live cd, but I think you can only
run the frontend booting that way. If you are worried about messing up you
existing system, I recommend removing the hard drive and putting a
different one in to install to and test. If you don't have a second drive
or you are a little less paranoid, you can install alongside you existing
operating system.

Thanks for the explanation.

I've tried to follow your advice:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1309752

This problem has been solved easily by disabling VNC, but I have another one (reported also on mythtv-users, I hope you don't mind cross-posting):

The installation was finished seemingly succesfully, but after reboot I get a blank screen and 2 keyboard LEDs flashing continuously.

When I boot in the recovery mode, I also get the flashing LEDs but I
see on the screen the end of some traceback. Should I write it down?

I install it on an external USB drive not to mess with my primary
system (Debian testing). This is an old disk, I have some other unused
systems (Debian and Windows XP) on it which I am also unable to boot,
but the symptoms are quite different.

Best regards

Janusz
