FWIW, Debian doesn't have ubuntu-font-family, so we'll need to fall back to current nimbus/times fonts there.

Sadly, this is not as simple as it sounds. I can think of some really hacky ways to do this (i.e. convert the ttf to something usable with latex at build time or ship it ourselves), but the best way would be to get the font package to ship something usable itself.
