OK, so it seems the split greeter is actually causing two instances of all indicators to be running, one on the greeter and another elsewhere. If I clear messages from the messaging indicator, they are still present in the other instance, while the greeter's version doesn't show contact names. In the case of the battery indicator, it seems to not just be running a second instance, but running completely different code for each instance.
