Two things we need for efficient video playback:
  1. Hardware codec support; and
  2. Hardware overlay bypass of simple surfaces.

Don't know the status of #1 but I've heard it was coming, if not landed already.

#2 is in progress with the Mir team right now (part of the "nested bypass" effort). Don't expect it finished till Mir 0.16 or Mir 0.17, or later.
