Did you download the recovery image from http://people.canonical.com/~jhm/barajas/recovery-krillin.img ? I know that error happens when it can't find the .img file otherwise what you are doing should work.
When it is stuck on the ubuntu screen can you see the device from the PC with adb devices or shell into it?
