barry, instead of using the alpha releases, could you try just running the dailys?
I start off with the earliest of the dailys (which will be Alpha 1, I suppose), and use the updates every couple of days, so effectively I am working with the dailys but on an installed version of the testing version. Odd times I end up with a broken system and it's often easier to reinstall from the latest daily build. Doing testing this way means that I am testing on a live system which I am using for all my normal work. If it breaks, I have the dual-boot stable version to fall back on and can move seamlessly (more or less) from the one to the other.
