   cd ubuntu-archive-tools/
  No commits yet on main  git status
  On branch main

  No commits yet

nothing to commit (create/copy files and use "git add" to track)

  No commits yet on main  git checkout main
Branch 'main' set up to track remote branch 'main' from 'origin'.
  Already on 'main'

    main  git status
  On branch main
Your branch is up to date with 'origin/main'.

nothing to commit, working tree clean

This is reproducible on bionic, focal, and impish.
