I created a local slapd.conf config file so that it gets not overriden
when dist-upgrading Ubuntu.

How about a directory for future Ubuntu versions:

/etc/ldap/slapd.conf.d/

There could be inserted more config files for different database
definitions. In my point of view it would be great to introduce these
xyz.d/ config directories for every service on the system.
