If I do that it just makes Apache crash completely when I try to access the page. Which is not surprising because /etc/passwd is not in a format that Apache understands and doesn't even contain the hashed passwords Please refer to the Apache documentation: it's possible I've made some kind of configuration error but using "AuthUserFile /etc/passwd" is clearly not going to work. http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/PasswordBasicAuth
