I now learned a bit more about the proxy configuration. swauth is broken for me as it always returns 127.0.0.1 storage URLs even if I put the public IP into default_swift_cluster, so I moved away from it to tempauth. So apparently there's quite a bit more variability in this than the initial tutorials suggest, so closing.
