Hi, I'm having the exact same issue. Can't find PID file.

mash...@linux:~$ ls -ld /var/run/samba
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 60 2009-08-20 22:09 /var/run/samba
mash...@linux:~$

One file in the directory:

mash...@linux:/var/run/samba$ ls -ltr
total 4
-rw------- 1 root root 696 2009-08-20 22:25 messages.tdb
mash...@linux:/var/run/samba$ sudo cat messages.tdb
[sudo] password for mashley:
TDB file
m↓☺&âmash...@linux:/var/run/samba$

Any ideas or workarounds?

It started when I first installed it. After reboot it failed to start.
