Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bind9

I was installing a few updates from the synaptic package manager. I had
unmarked some of the updates like the some audio libraries, and then
added some that I thought were important. I guess it failed to check all
the dependencies and allowed me to try to install a package without its
dependencies.
