I agree it would be nice to have this fully automatic.

Note that if you are using dhcp for your host's network, you can put a
line into /etc/dhcp/dchpclient.conf like:

prepend domain-name-servers 192.168.122.1;

which will ensure that 192.168.122.1 is listed as your first nameserver.
The shortcoming compared to what you are asking for is that you do need
to know the dnsmasq server's ip address in advance, but of course you
configure this (using 'virsh net-edit default') anyway.

Does this suffice for your needs?
