I had the same error(Bug #873722 ) when upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10. After
this error the upgrade was terminated and the upgrade program notified me that
my upgraded system might be unstable. I did a restart and so far everything
works fine.
I even managed to finish installing Samba. When I opened the Update manager
there was only one packet to install and that was
Samba. I tried to install it but Update manager said it was corrupted or
something(not really sure). But the Update manager also recommended running
"apt-get install -f" in terminal. This command successfully installed Samba.

But my question is-how can I finish the upgrade procedure? It was close to the
finish when it aborted but at least
the "Cleaning up" process didn't run. Is there any way to see if everything is
as it should be?

Thank you everybody!
