Peter, I don't understand where you are going. Perhaps I have failed to make clear the point of the discussion. I originally was explaining to a newcomer the reason that install discs that he burns at home will fail more than than perhaps he is accustomed to. I also explained the reason for the way things are so that he would understand at least a little of the engineering tradeoffs that go into making an install CD. I am not saying that the install disks should not be compressed or that there is anything wrong with the way Ubuntu Server Edition is packaged. To the contrary, the strategy of fitting everything you need to get started onto one CD, together with the unbelievably powerful apt system, simplifies distribution and further encourages the adoption of the Ubuntu system. Professionally mastered CDs are available for those who don't want to go through the hassle of burning their own install disk. If I'm missing something, please let me know.
