Thank you for your reply Guilherme. I have decided to try your second
item and install version 4.15.0-43-generic.
Using google I have found the following commands:
sudo apt install
linux-{image,headers,modules,modules-extra}-4.15.0-43-generic
sudo apt-mark hold linux-*-4.15.0-4[45]-generic
sudo apt remove linux-*-4.15.0-4[45]-generic
I am not experienced with such matters and would appreciate your
comments. The only access I have into my server is via an insecure putty
application.
I apologize for seeking your advice on what must be basic maintenance
but your comments would be much appreciated.

Hi, the kernel with this fix for Bionic is present in the -proposed repository,
the version is 4.15.0-46-generic. To enable proposed packages, you
can check [0].
Alternatively, you can install version 4.15.0-43-generic, which does not
have the offending patches that caused the tty issue.
Cheers,
Guilherme
