The way it works for me is that the machine that has no problem with NM doesn't need it. Static IP, set once by editing file, turn off NM forever. But that box had no problem with NM. The netbook on the other hand can be expected to want NM to work because it is portable and the settings might change by the day or even more often for someone traveling. That is the machine that needs NM, but also has a problem with it. Am I trying to do too much with this box? certainly more than it has been designed for. But that has been part of the whole linux thing from day one. I think I need to break this down to realistic workfows. there are some workflows that need low latency. Like live effects or softsynth kinds of things. Shutting down NM for any live use like that should not be a problem. This would be pushing this kind of machine to it's limits anyway. The odd xrun is not going to be a real problem or if it is, use better hardware. Recording... stuck with USB... probably USB1.1 seeing as usb2.0 drivers are iffy at best. Certainly only two channels for the internal audio IF. In any case an external preamp is needed and the input should be monitored from there, not the computer sound output. (even with high end hardware) some extra latency should be ok even for tracking as most modern DAWs know how to deal with delay so the tracks are synced. Ardour defaults to 46msec latency and my netbook seems to be ok with half that. So the answer is to configure for the use. The idea of having a record mode should probably changed to having a low latency mode. One that is configurable to the needs of the hardware and use intended.
