But makes perfect sense if you understand how it works. The problem is
that there seems to be no way of deleting the application starter that was
created. I think also that arguments can't be passed at that point...
however...

Nope, two files... stored in two different directories even. The one for
the panel is used in only one place. The one in the menu, however, may
show up in more than one place because you are editing something that is
already in more than one place. However, If I create a new menu item, it
ends up in other and I don't seem to be able to move it. I am thinking why
this may be, but it hasn't come to me so far.... :)

alacarte, I think, has some limitations. It seems from looking at the
./config/menus/application.menu file, that any new items created will all
end up in "other" unless specifically added (by name) somewhere else.
alacarte does not add a category to the desktop file so it can't sort
itself by other means.

I can't say how much of this is "by design" (most of it I'd say) and what
may be a bug. However, I do not think this is an xfce problem. Xfce seems
to be doing what the files alacarte created are telling it to do. I can
not see any reason (from what I know about merging menu files) that more
could not be done. No I am not going to code an extension for it :)
