There are proper names for menu icons generally of the form
applications-menutype. I would like to keep our menu as "standard" as
possible by using these names. There are actually some useful icons
already and so I have used them. Below are my notes on the icons we need
that didn't seem to be stock and what I am doing about them. Most of this
is already committed and just waiting upload.

>>> - We need a new icon for a publishing submenu
The correct icon to use would applications-publishing, but that icon does
not show well at 22x22, applications-fonts does a better job. We have
applications-publishing for now, but if I have time I will make another
one as I don't know what the copyright is on -fonts (I would probably have
to list all the contributors the elementary-xfce theme).

>>> - The icon we use for audio production comes from Aeolus and
>>> should be replaced. -INPROGRESS - committed
This is an icon Mish made for us, though he was not completely happy with
it as it is just a guitar. I am thinking I may layer a keyboard behind...
A tape machine might be to hard to make out at 22x22. A distinctive
microphone? (SM58s are easy to draw but boring, and akg414?)

>>>  - mixers -INPROGRESS - committed
This is another of Mish's creations, he was thinking for synths or
generators, but I think it works better for mixers.

>>>  - video -INPROGRESS - committed
Mish's again. Pretty standard idea, but nicer than anything else and gets
the point across.

>>> - midi utilities is mine - DONE
I've left what we have for now unless someone comes up with something
better :)

>>> - The icon for our extra install menu items.. I am using the
stock Software Center icon -DONE
The other possibility would be to use the menu icon for each one, but I
think the download symbol from software center (which is what it runs
anyway) lets the user know what to expect best.
>>> - The sound generators submenu -COMMITTED
I have created one for this... keyboard with a generator symbol

>>>  - Photography - DONE
There is an applications-photography icon already, but it looks like a
point and shoot camera and we want to attract "professional" photographers
so I have renamed mine to applications-photography as at least it looks
like an SLR.

>>>  - Effects  -COMMITTED
I tried some different things. I ended up with some eq wave forms on a
wide arrow background. The 48x48 part looks ok, I am not sure of the
22x22. The wave forms may need widening.

I should maybe take the svg icons that I have (some are pngs from scratch)
and generate 22x22 icons direct. I'll have to see how much difference that
makes.

For those interested, the stock icons I was referring to reside in:
/usr/share/icons/elementary-xfce/categories/48/

And I have attached any new ones.
