when did this change? I always could log in with my launchpad/Ubuntu one
account and edit those pages.

no explanation why.

I guess I will not continue to contribute to those pages. Is there valid
a reason to make it extra hard to help?

It was put in place when the wiki was under pressure from spammers as an extra measure to dissuade them iirc.

Please bear in mind this was nothing to do with me - just passing on what I remember from the incident

Not sure that joining a LP group is really that much of a hardship tbh.
