Have you tried modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf? Set the default depth to 24 and then remove all resolutions except for the one you want.eg. DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1280x1024" I have an FX5200 and the proprietary drivers work well.
