Hi Ubuntero's, A lot of the packages in Ubuntu are coming directly from Debian (unstable). This also counts for the multimedia packages which are in Ubuntu Studio. Those multimedia packages are packed by the members of the Debian Multimedia Team.
There are a lot of multimedia packages build by the Debian Multimedia Team, but there are also a lot which are not in Debian yet and so also not in Ubuntu (Studio). So the Debian Multimedia Team can use some more people who like to take care of one multimedia package which you uses a lot and which is not in Debian and Ubuntu yet. *Why should a Ubuntero join the Debian Multimedia Team?* 1) It will improve Ubuntu for multimedia production (you know Ubuntu uses the packages from Debian (unstable) 2) It will improve not only Ubuntu but also Debian and many other derivatives. So it will improve the quality of the state of multimedia software on Linux in general. 3) you learn to build great quality packages. *Other advantages?* Yes, in Debian it is possible to just be a package maintainer. So you just pick one package which you will maintain. You don't have to become a Debian Developer (DD). There is great support by the Debian Multimedia Team and the Debian mentors (mailinglist). *Why not building packages for my own Ubuntu PPA repo? *This is ok of course, but is has serious disadvantages: a) the packages are in general less safe and stable b) the packages are not tested by many people c) it is not desirable to have a widespread of thousands private repo's, it's far more better to bundle forces. *What can I do? * 1) Build or improve packages for the Debian Multimedia Team. It's recommended to maintain packages you use yourself often. 2) Report bugs and wishes 3) Join the Debian multimedia team mailing list: http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/pkg-multimedia-maintainers *Where can I find more info?* Wiki: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia Building packages for Debian (unstable) on Ubuntu: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PbuilderHowto Packaging: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia/DevelopPackaging Existing packages which needs help: http://wnpp.debian.net/ Debian New Maintainers' guide: http://www.debian.org/doc/maint-guide/ (!) Bugs: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?which=maint&data=debian-multimedia%40lists.debian.org&archive=no&version=&dist=unstable It would be great if you choose one package which you uses a lot and maintain it for the Debian Multimedia Team! It would improve the quality of Linux audio and it will help the whole community! Thanks in advance, Rooz ps.
