Mine too was on the hardware monitor. Yes, I am quite sure it is a setup issue. I returned my first unit thinking it was a hardware problem. The second one did the same thing. So I started working on the setup. One thing I believe helped was the sample rate in JACK defaults to 44100Hz. The Alesis samples at 48000Hz. I am on a new installation of Natty right now but here is JACK setup that works for me:
