Is there any way of seeing the dates of partitions,
or figuring some other way what's what?

Before installing systems onto a PC, I draw out a map of the hard disks, and decide what partitions to set up and what will go where.

For example, I might decide to put Ubuntu Studio in sda1, Mint in sda5, home in sda6, swap in another partition, etc. It also helps to make each partition a different size.

Once something is installed, I use gparted to label each partition so I know what's what.

If you install something without remembering what is what, then mount everything, examine the contents, and then label each partition in gparted.
