Hi, the common way to reset a forgotten root password is to chroot the Linux install by another Linux, nowadays systemd-nspawn -D is the easier and more powerful way that does replace chroot, IOW if using chroot or sytemd-nspawn -D depends to the used distro (e.g. by a live CD) to hack your Ubuntu Studio install.
ATI proprietary driver versions can only be used for some ATI cards and different versions of ATI drivers need different versions of X. Before changing something on a working system, a superuser has to read release notes of updates, or before changing graphics drivers to search the web for information. How to reset a graphics driver to the state before making a change, is also available by the Internet. Some time ago I was ask off-list not to help users by searching for them using http://lmgtfy.com/ , instead I should post http://www.giyf.com/ . If a search engine doesn't help, than sending a smart question to a list is useful. However, the FLOSS driver does provide other, than just VESA resolutions too. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Ubuntu+ATI+free+driver Happy New Year!
