I agree - the software centre is completely unusable, because it doesn't work! I don't understand why it is even packaged with this (or any) distro. Try using Synaptic Package Manager, or apt-get from the command line. To install Synaptic from the command line (in a terminal), type sudo apt-get install synaptic press Enter, then enter your password as requested.
