It can take some time to find the right triaging advice with all the links in there, but I always turn to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BugSquad/ when I want to find some tips on bug triage. There is a page on Bug Triage, and a Knowledge Base page. Normally for freezes and lockups that page points you to a page on Kernel triage & X triage. But of course, it could also be hardware. You could try running another distro/release on a live CD or installed to a spare hard disk to try and eliminate a software bug. Keep us up to date. Someone else with more experience might have time to help out when you report back.
