I believe it's most likely an AMD card, as Nvidia's drivers are still available 
from the proprietary driver selection, unless the system was installed in 
free-software mode.

I also have a Radeon VGA running the FOSS-driver and most applications work 
fine (except of AgryllCMS/dispwin color calibration because of broken VideoLUT 
and some missing hardware acceleration that demands the proprietary Nvidia 
driver because of CUDA or something similar). So maybe using the default driver 
is fine, but William could also try installing the proprietary AMD GPU-Pro 
driver and see how it works before reinstalling:
