Many thanks for your replies,

Yes I do have the Ubuntu v5.04 for ppc. Description of my machine as follows:

The Apple Power Macintosh 5500/275, based on the Gazelle architecture, features a 275 MHz PowerPC 603e processor, 32 MB of RAM (up-graded to 128 MB), a 4.0 GB hard drive, 2D/3D graphics acceleration, and a TV tuner in a sleek black all-in-one case with a 15" color monitor.Unfortunately, this model was sold only in Europe. (c1997/98)

Boot from CD for macs can be enabled with a very easy keyboard shortcut - hold down c key on start-up, and the start-up disc can also be defined in the control panels - both of which I have tried!

I must warn that it can be a strange and tempremental machine, i.e. after re-initialising my hard-drive, failing to install Ubuntu, re-installing mac OS 8.6... It is now refusing to accept my midi connection!

But I will continue to work on the problems. Please also be aware that I am not on-line, I am using public access pc's. So unfortunately downloads must fit on a floppy, and I have previously had difficulties downloading mac software via pc.

Once again my thanks for your help, and all help is welcome...

Ian
