I figured out what to pass:-

        [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo escputil -i -u -r /dev/usb/lp0

and 
        [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo escputil -n -u -r /dev/usb/lp0
        
gave

        Running nozzle check, please ensure paper is in the printer.

making the printer spit out a sheet of paper with lines showing the nozzles 
working.

So, I have confirmed my connection and printer, still can't get anything to 
print from cups though.
