Stephen,

are you using the inbuilt keyboard, or an external keyboard?  It seems this is
a general problem with Edgy on laptops, as I had the same issue on my Toshiba
Portege (with an external keyboard - haven't tried the internal kb yet).  From
memory, I had to add a couple of xmodmap statements to /etc/profile.
