Just wanted to say thinks to everyone for the suggestions and info, I tried 
6.10 in the laptop from the CD Rom and it seemed to run OK.  It's An Acer 
Aspire 1682wlm btwi... didn't get to try the wireless as I couldn't remember 
my preshared key (WPA2 63 random characters :o ) but I'll copy it to my 
flash drive tomorrow and see if I can connect.
