I think you should leave the current installation for the moment, and create a /home partition during the new install. Personally, I have 3 partitions, root, home and swap. I think the feisty installer is meant to migrate old Ubuntu installations as well as Windows, although it didn't work for me when I reinstalled feisty next to a dapper installation - YMMV. I had one problem where I missed out one user during creation (it was only for testing a year ago), which meant the numeric ID of the last user created was different. This isn't too difficult to fix from the command-line when you know what you're doing, but it's easier if you can get it right first time as Alan suggested.
