I have used the apt-get dist-upgrade method on one server. I used the "gksu update-manager -d" method on 5 machines and for 4 it worked flawlessly. YMMV The one machine that didn't work was my desktop - the actual upgrade itself was fine, but gutsy refuses to boot on it.
