Well I'd say my Dell Latitude D610 is really well supported. Everything works out of the box. I can't say I've tried the newer Latitudes (D630) but looking at the spec, they seem to be pretty much the same with an Intel CPU/chipset, Intel Wireless (although IIRC they have Nvidia video on board rather than ATI, although this might just be the model we got in at work). Maybe you might be worth looking at the Dell Ubuntu laptops. I'm sure you could probably get a pretty decent dual core laptop for around the £600 mark which would last you for a good couple of years.
